Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about BigTimeUp website monitoring

How often does BigTimeUp check my website?

BigTimeUp checks your websites every 5 minutes, 24/7/365. This means each site is checked 288 times per day, ensuring rapid detection of downtime or performance issues. The frequent 5-minute interval strikes the perfect balance between catching issues quickly and avoiding excessive server load on your sites.

What happens when my site goes down?

When BigTimeUp detects that your site is down (after 2 consecutive failed checks to avoid false positives), all members of your organization immediately receive an email alert. The alert includes details about what went wrong, when it was detected, and the HTTP status code or error message. You'll also receive a recovery notification when your site comes back online, so you know the issue is resolved.

How do I set up monitoring for my first website?

Setting up monitoring is simple! After creating your account and verifying your email, log in to your dashboard and click "Add Site". Enter your website URL (like https://example.com) and click "Start Monitoring". BigTimeUp will immediately begin checking your site every 5 minutes. For detailed step-by-step instructions, check out our Getting Started guide.

What is an SSL certificate check?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificates are what enable HTTPS connections and secure data transmission on your website. BigTimeUp automatically monitors your SSL certificates and tracks their expiration dates. You'll receive an email alert 30 days before your certificate expires, giving you plenty of time to renew it before visitors see scary "Not Secure" warnings in their browsers. We also verify that your certificates are valid and properly configured.

How much data history is retained?

BigTimeUp retains detailed monitoring data (individual check results, response times, status codes) for 30 days. This gives you a full month of granular data to review incidents and analyze trends. After 30 days, data is aggregated into hourly summaries to maintain long-term performance trends while managing storage efficiently.

Can I monitor multiple websites?

Yes! You can monitor as many websites as you need. Simply add each website through the dashboard by clicking "Add Site". You can also use the "Bulk Add" feature to add multiple sites at once by entering one URL per line. All monitored sites appear in your dashboard with real-time status information.

Who receives email alerts when a site goes down?

All members of your organization receive email alerts for all monitored websites. This team-based approach ensures everyone stays informed about uptime issues. You can invite team members through the Organization page by clicking "Invite Member". They'll receive an email invitation to join and will immediately start receiving alerts for all your monitored sites.

What types of issues does BigTimeUp detect?

BigTimeUp detects three main types of issues: (1) Downtime - when your website is completely unavailable or returns error codes like 404, 500, 503, etc.; (2) Slow Response Times - when your site takes too long to respond, indicating performance problems; and (3) SSL Certificate Issues - when certificates are expired, invalid, or about to expire. Each type of issue triggers its own specific alert with relevant details.

Does BigTimeUp work with all types of websites?

BigTimeUp works with any publicly accessible website that responds to HTTP/HTTPS requests. This includes static sites, WordPress, e-commerce stores, web applications, APIs, and more. We support both HTTP and HTTPS (secured) sites. Your site must be accessible from the public internet - we cannot monitor sites behind authentication, localhost, or internal networks.

What is uptime percentage and how is it calculated?

Uptime percentage represents the proportion of time your website was accessible and working correctly. It's calculated by dividing successful checks by total checks, then multiplying by 100. For example, 99.9% uptime (often called "three nines") means your site was down for approximately 43 minutes in a 30-day period. BigTimeUp displays uptime percentages for 24 hours, 7 days, and 30 days, helping you track your site's reliability over different time periods.

Can I see historical monitoring data?

Yes! Click on any website in your dashboard to view detailed historical data including uptime percentages, response time graphs, incident history, and SSL certificate status over the past 30 days. You can see exactly when downtime occurred, how long it lasted, what error was returned, and how your site's performance has trended over time. This data helps you identify patterns and make informed decisions about your infrastructure.

Is my website data secure?

Yes, we take security seriously. All data transmission is encrypted using HTTPS. We only store publicly accessible information about your websites (URLs, response times, status codes) - we never access or store private content, user data, or authentication credentials. Your monitoring data is isolated to your organization and only accessible to authorized team members. For more details, review our Privacy Policy.
